TANJAY, PHILIPPINES
Fish, Vegetables & Happiness
If you ever wondered what makes people happy, the residents of a small city called Tanjay will tell you that its in the fish! Don't take my word for it, but when I visited the market, it seemed that everyone was in good spirits and the fish seemed to be the cause of the laughter.

Located in the Southern region of the Philippines, Tanjay belongs to the province of Negros Oriental. About 1 million people live in the province. I'm not quite sure how many actually live in Tanjay. The Spanish used to occupy the province and the name "Negros Oriental" comes from them. They called it "Negros" because of the dark skinned people (Malays) who inhabited the islands. The province is bounded by water (Tanon Straits and Sulu Sea) and therefore has extensive marine resources. Fishing is thus the main source of livelihood in the coastal areas and in Tanjay the fish seems to be a source of life as well.
