VIENNA, AUSTRIA
When Walls Speak

Hundertwasser means "full-of-peace hundred-water". It was the name of Friendensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), a Viennese "Session Movement" artist who constantly called for peace and the destruction of fascism both in his art as well as in his political speeches (which were sometimes rendered in the nude!). Although he created works of art in many mediums, he is most known for his new forms of architecture. He was disappointed with modern cities, calling them 'ugly because the ruler and the T-square create limited possibilities'.

Hundertwasser's buildings, in contrast, emphasise the irregular and the natural. His best-known work, the Hundertwasser House, has a virtual forest growing from the rooftop and trees jut out its windows. Inside, the interiors are covered with grass and hanging gardens.
