The sea gives and the sea takes away. Humankind depends on the sea for sustenance and for centuries we have been benefitting from the vast underwater resources it has to offer. For centuries too, fishermen especially, have lost their lives in the untamed waters.

Of the many ways that the sea can engulf men and make herself a watery grave for them, the deadliest form by far is the tsunami which doesn't even require men to be in the sea, but just to be near it.

Tsunami is a name given by the Japanese which means, harbor wave. The world has adopted this term to refer to gigantic waves because of the many that hits Japanese shores due to its geographical position in the Pacific Ring of Fire (so called because of the many underwater volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean). But as we have seen recently (26 Dec 2004) in the Indian Ocean, any large body of water disturbed by crashing underwater tectonic plates can explode with incredible fury. |

In business, stock analysts and traders use the term "waves" to describe the ebb and flow of stock prices. There are no tsunamis in the Stock Exchange because if there are large fluctuations in a stock price, the Securities and Exchange Commission (governing body in charge) would halt trading on that stock.
