Poinsettias, are part of the Euphorbiaceae family. Many plants in this family ooze a milky sap. Some science books will tell you that poinsettias are poisonous but in fact eating the plant will only give you a slight tummy ache. Why you would eat it in the first place is altogether another matter.

The red colored part of poinsettias that most people think are flowers are actually colored bracts or modified leaves. The flowers are the small yellow things in the center of the colorful bracts. In nature, poinsettias are a perennial flowering shrubs that can grow to an amazing ten feet tall!
