In
17th century Japan, poet and writer Ihara Saikaku wrote "There
is always something to upset the most careful of human calculations."
In 21st century Singapore, things are not much different.
Indeed, there is little to assure us that our goals, no matter
how carefully studied, will work according to plan. Failure is thus
not something to fear, but something to expect.
But while failure is always a concern, it should never become a
deterrent to act. We can take heart in the many "failures"
of our century who later became our leaders and pioneers in their
fields. For instance, it took Thomas Edison more than 10,000 tries
before he successfully invented the light bulb. So Edison says with
much wisdom, "Just because something doesn't do what you planned
it to do doesn't mean it's useless."
Inventor, writer and philosopher Benjamin Franklin agreed and understood
that, "Failure is the opportunity to begin again, more intelligently."
But definitely no one understands failure more than the entrepreneur
who faces his or her fair share more than others. Having far reaching
responsibilities and needing to stay ahead of others to grow, it
is inevitable that the entrepreneur will face many setbacks, many
obstacles and constantly streaming challenges. But the entrepreneur
will always prefer the possibility of failure and making mistakes
than not having that option. After all, the only time you cannot
fail is when you are doing nothing.
So make your failures count! Reach for something difficult instead
of something safe today.
